1980
From rocket launches to revolutionary new technology, explore the milestones that have shaped our journey and redefined industries.
1980
Where It All Started
Three people–Charlie Ergen, Candy Ergen, and Jim DeFranco–founded EchoStar as a C-band satellite distributor in 1980. From day one, they exemplified the determination, resiliency, and grit that would come to define the company. That attitude was on full display in a now-legendary story from our early days.
While hauling an enormous C-band satellite dish to a customer in remote Colorado, a powerful gust of wind blew the dish off its trailer and into a roadside ditch. At the time, this dish was one of two in the company's inventory. In the blink of an eye, half the inventory was gone. But our founders didn't let that moment stop them.
1992
Real Estate in Space
After filing in 1987 for a direct broadcast satellite license, EchoStar was granted our real estate in space: orbital slot 119° west longitude.
This achievement set the stage for a future where connectivity is powered not just by innovation, but by the stars.
1995
EchoStar I
On December 28, 1995, we bet the future of the company on a single rocket—EchoStar I—which had a 50% chance of success. Thankfully, the launch went as planned, clearing the way for our first broadcast customers in March 1996.
2000s
Ahead of the Curve
DISH Network, a subsidiary of EchoStar, grew rapidly from the late-1990s through the 2000s. That’s because we connected consumers with what they want. We believe TV- and technology-loving families shouldn’t have to work in IT to operate a remote, mortgage the house to pay for cable, or jump through hoops to watch the shows they love. It’s why we invented the world’s first DVR, introduced the 2-Year TV Price Guarantee, developed the voice remote and launched Remote Finder. It’s why we gave our customers the power to watch TV anywhere and skip the commercials. And it’s why our customer satisfaction scores are some of the highest in the industry.
2008
Forging New Paths
In January 2008, EchoStar and DISH Network became two separate companies. From that moment, each forged ahead as distinct entities, growing, evolving, and mastering their respective areas of expertise. DISH Network focused primarily on the DISH TV business, while EchoStar retained ownership of the technology side including the satellites, Sling Media, and the set-top box development arm.
2011
Connecting the World
In February 2011, EchoStar acquired Hughes Communications, an industry leader in broadband equipment and services. This combination created a global communications powerhouse.
2015
Revolutionizing Streaming TV

2016
Pushing Boundaries in Satellite Technology
In December 2016, EchoStar launched EchoStar XIX, which at the time was the world's highest-capacity satellite. This monumental achievement set new standards in satellite broadband, delivering unprecedented connectivity and performance across North America.
2020
Revolutionizing Wireless with Boost Mobile
In July 2020, DISH Network officially entered the consumer wireless industry with the acquisition of Boost Mobile, a company synonymous with value and innovation. Together, we're building a wireless brand to upend the retail market and deliver groundbreaking new experiences for all.
2020
Pioneering 5G Innovation
In December 2020, DISH Network achieved a breakthrough by successfully integrating and validating end-to-end 5G connections using the industry’s first O-RAN compliant FDD radio. This was a significant step forward as we continued to build our cutting-edge 5G network, redefining the future of connectivity.
2023
Taking Connectivity to New Heights
In July 2023, EchoStar launched JUPITER 3, also known as EchoStar XXIV, the largest commercial communications satellite ever built. This remarkable achievement redefined the possibilities of satellite technology, delivering unmatched capacity and connectivity to millions.
2024
More Powerful Together
On December 31, 2023, DISH Network merged with EchoStar Corporation, and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of EchoStar. The combined company is a new kind of athlete in global telecom, with connectivity capabilities far exceeding any other company in its industry.
